This was my first time eating at the Back Bay restaurant and I was excited to try some of the menu items that you would not find in other restaurants. I was especially excited knowing that this restaurant shares the same ownership with Lookout Steakhouse and Salute, 2 of my favorite restaurants to dine at on the coast (review for these to come soon). My wife and I shared an appetizer, each had a dinner, and shared a dessert. This restaurant, as most, had its highlights and lowlights within our meal.
Crawfish Florentine Bread
The wife and I shared the Crawfish Florentine Bread whose description was marked as sauteed crawfish with spinach and artichoke cream over rosemary bread. My wife and I both found this appetizer to be wonderful. It was a mix of southern cooking with a cajun attitude. This is definitely one of those meals you could get nowhere else than the gulf coast. The taste wonderful with maybe the only complaint being that butter on the bread was not needed because it slightly hid the taste of the rosemary which was wonderful.
Oyster Florentine
My wife had the oyster florentine which was described as gulf oyster fried over linguine with spinach and artichoke cream. The spinach and artichoke cream was the only highlight with this meal. Although the oysters were fried correctly, there lack of taste left a bad taste in my opinion. The linguine unless completely mixed with the topping was very tasteless as well. We would not order this dish again.
Grilled Flounder Filet
I had the grilled flounder with shrimp bordelaise which is described as Grilled flounder filet topped with shrimp garlic bordelaise sauce and served with rice & veggies. I found this meal to be wonderful. The shrimp bordelaise, a gulf coast staple, was wonderfully cooked and the flounder fell apart as you ate it. The vegetables were crisp and tasteful as you would expect. I would definitely order this meal again.
Chocolate Bomb
For dessert, my wife and I split a chocolate bomb and ice cream. This meal has been a staple of the lookout restaurants as long as I can remember. The only changes to this were the addition of ice cream and a cherry. My wife and I differed on this aspect. I believed that the ice cream was unneeded and she actually enjoyed it with the chocolate bomb. Either way, we both agreed it amount could be lessened. It is impossible to go wrong with this meal though as the chocolate bomb is always cooked correctly and has a wonderful taste.
Side Notes:
- The salad dressing is always wonderful at these restaurants especially the balsalmic vinagrette. It has a sweet taste making a salad taste like dessert.
- There were 8 white wines and 9 reds ranging from $5-8 a glass.
- The service was wonderful all night although the smell of smoke on the waiter was noticed after his breaks.
Overall Impression:
This restaurant offered less than I expected. It was by no means a horrible experience but it did leave a lot to be desired. The overall cost of the meal for us was $47 before tip so it was not an expensive affair. I was hoping for more of the feel of the other restaurants under the owner but was less than impressed.
My overall score for this store:
